Trekking shoes or hiking boots? - The difference

While a hike usually lasts a few hours at most, a trekking tour lasts several days. As a result, trekking shoes are usually exposed to higher loads than hiking boots and have to be particularly robust. They are therefore usually somewhat heavier, stiffer and firmer than hiking boots and are therefore ideal for tours lasting several days.

The right shoes for your outdoor adventure

Are you planning a trekking tour? Then the right shoes are a must! But: Can't I just go trekking in hiking boots? - In principle, yes, but we definitely recommend special trekking shoes for a multi-day tour in alpine terrain. Because they are more robust, firmer and stiffer, they are better able to withstand the particular stresses and strains of a trekking tour while protecting your feet. Trekking shoes are worn for much longer than hiking shoes. Trekking shoes are specially designed to withstand these loads.

In addition to the right shoes, you also need other equipment for trekking, such as a trekking rucksack.

Buying trekking shoes: What to look out for?

Good trekking shoes are the be-all and end-all for a long trekking tour. Few things are more unpleasant than having to wear ill-fitting, uncomfortable shoes for several days. You should pay attention to the following points when buying trekking shoes:

  • The size of the trekking shoes: Trekking shoes should never pinch or cut into your feet, as you will be wearing them for many hours over several days. When choosing the size, make sure that you will also be wearing socks. Your feet will also swell slightly during the tour, so if in doubt, go for a size larger rather than smaller.

  • The upper: Trekking shoes usually have a high upper for optimum support. This means you are sure-footed even on unpaved paths.

  • Waterproof trekking shoes: Trekking shoes are usually waterproof - and that's important! Because once the inside of the shoe has become wet, it is difficult to dry again on a multi-day trekking tour.

  • Sure-footed travelling with the right sole: The soles of trekking shoes should be torsion-resistant and have a pronounced profile for optimum sure-footedness

It is also important to break in your trekking shoes before you set off on your first trekking tour. This will prevent blisters on your feet.

Care & clean trekking shoes

Are your shoes dirty and soiled after a tour? Then you should definitely clean them, as dirt can damage the material in the long term.

To clean them, start by knocking the soles of the trekking shoes together to loosen the coarsest dirt. Then wipe the shoes with a damp cloth or simply brush them down. To protect the surface afterwards, apply leather wax to smooth leather and a suitable waterproofing spray to all other materials.

The trekking shoes should ideally dry at room temperature. If possible, avoid exposing the shoes to direct heat so as not to put too much strain on the material. You can also remove the insoles to dry them.

To enjoy your trekking shoes for a long time, you should treat them regularly with waterproofing spray or, in the case of smooth leather shoes, with shoe wax.
