The layering principle or onion principle for outdoor clothing

The functionality of outdoor clothing is fully realised when it is used according to the layering principle :

1. Layer: outdoor underwear

The first layer in the onion principle is the underwear. The main purpose of this layer is to keep you dry and wick away sweat and moisture . Underwear made from synthetic fibres or merino wool, for example, is very suitable here. It is also important that you can move easily in your clothing.

2. Layer: Keep warm

The task of the second layer is to keep you warm. The body should be protected from heat loss. Fleece shirts, functional shirts, fleece jackets, padded jackets and thin down jackets are particularly suitable here.

3. Layer: Weather protection

The third and final layer is designed to protect you from the weather. In other words, it should protect your body from rain, wind, snow and storms. The third layer should essentially fulfil two points: It should be waterproof , but also breathable to let moisture from the inside out.

Outdoor clothing for every area of use

Whether trekking, hiking, cycling, skiing or climbing - every outdoor sport places different demands on clothing.

Outdoor clothing for hiking

When it comes to hiking clothing, comfortable hiking boots and hiking socks are particularly important. The choice of clothing should then be adapted to the type and length of your hike. Dress according to the weather conditions and plan for possible changes in the weather. The basic equipment for hiking enthusiasts should include functional underwear, functional shirts, hiking pants and a hiking jacket. A rain jacket, possibly a hat or multifunctional scarf, multifunctional scarf and gloves are also important. For sun protection, you should think about sunglasses and headgear.

Trekking outdoor clothing

If you are trekking for several days, then you have to expect different weather situations. Accordingly, your clothing must be suitable for different weather conditions and be particularly robust. Multifunctional items of clothing are particularly practical here to minimise your luggage.

Climbing clothing

Climbing clothing differs depending on where and how you climb. When bouldering and climbing in the climbing gym, mobility and comfort are more important. When alpine, via ferrata or ice climbing, weather protection also plays a major role. Clothing should also be much more robust.

Outdoor clothing for cycling

Are you looking for clothing for cycling? Then think about cycling underwear (pants with integrated seat padding) and cycling gloves. Here too, it depends very much on where and how you cycle. With road bike clothing, aerodynamics, breathability and wind protection are particularly important, whereas with MTB clothing you should make sure that you can also wear knee pads and other protectors without any problems.

Outdoor clothing for winter: Ski or snowboard clothing

Skiing or snowboarding in winter? In winter, it is of course important to stay warm and protected from the wet. With warm functional underwear made from merino wool, for example, you are well protected. Then add ski pants and a ski jacket. Don't forget ski socks, gloves and a multifunctional scarf!

Washing outdoor & functional clothing

Is it even possible to wash functional clothing? And what should you bear in mind? How often can you wash functional clothing?

In principle, the first layer of clothing - the functional underwear - should of course be washed much more frequently than the second or third layer, as it lies directly on the skin and absorbs sweat.

If you also want to wash your outdoor jacket or other functional clothing, you should note the following:

  1. Use a special detergent for functional clothing. In our textile care section, you will find special detergents that you can use to gently wash your outdoor clothing.
  2. Do not use fabric softener.
  3. Wash functional clothing at 30°C or a maximum of 40°C and spin at a maximum of 600 revolutions.
  4. The washing machine must not be too full. It is best to wash each item of outdoor clothing separately.
  5. To protect the waterproofing, it can be useful to put the functional clothing briefly in the tumble dryer. However, only in the gentle cycle for approx. 20 minutes.
  6. You can then treat your functional clothing with waterproofing wax or waterproofing spray.
