Motorhome awning: more space and comfort when camping

An additional living room, bedroom, a large kitchen or simply storage space? None of this is a problem when camping with a motorhome awning. It also offers protection from rain and wind. So the advantages are obvious - but what should you look out for when buying an awning?

There is a large selection of motorhome awnings - we can help you find the right awning for you.

Free-standing motorhome awning or retractable awning?

Basically, you should first decide between a free-standing awning and an awning that is attached to the piping rail of your motorhome.

Advantage of a free-standing motorhome awning

You can continue to drive away with your motorhome as normal without having to take down the tent. For example, if you want to do the shopping or go on an excursion, you can drive off in your motorhome as normal without having to put the awning away. This is a great advantage if you are planning to take a few trips in the surrounding area with your motorhome and want to return to your campsite in the evening.

Attaching a freestanding motorhome awning to the motorhome in a waterproof manner

Free-standing motorhome awnings usually have a connecting structure (sometimes also referred to as an airlock). This connecting structure can be easily attached to the roof of the motorhome using guy ropes. This creates a watertight connection between the motorhome and awning.

Retracted motorhome awning

Another option is to pull the piping of the motorhome awning into the piping rail or awning of the motorhome. The advantage over a free-standing awning is that it is much tighter and therefore more suitable for bad weather or winter.

Inflatable motorhome awning or awning with poles?

Would you rather buy an inflatable awning or one with classic poles? The current trend is clearly in favour of inflatable awnings, as they offer a number of advantages. Firstly, it is quick to set up and is also very stable: in strong winds, an inflatable motorhome awning simply collapses and then returns to its original shape. In addition, inflatable motorhome awnings are generally lighter than tents with poles.

Which awning is right for my motorhome?

Finding the right motorhome awning for your motorhome: What should I look out for when buying an awning?

Motorhome awnings are available in different sizes and dimensions. To make sure you find the right motorhome awning for your motorhome, you should consider the following points:

  • Connection height: We always specify a connection height for motorhome awnings. The height of your piping rail should match the specified connection height.
  • Kederthickness: The specified keder thickness should correspond to the thickness of your keder rail.
  • Keder insertionlength: The keder insertion length specified by us should match the length of your keder rail.

Pay attention to the water column

The waterproofness of tents is specified in the so-called water column. This indicates how high water can stand on the awning until it penetrates. According to the DIN standard, a tent is considered waterproof from a water column of 1300 mm. However, this is only the lower limit. We recommend a water column of at least 3000 mm in order to be protected from heavy rain.

The floor of the motorhome awning, on the other hand, should have a water column of at least 8,000 mm - so you are also protected against wetness and moisture from the ground.

Caring for and cleaning your motorhome awning

A motorhome awning is very easy to clean. In most cases, a simple cloth and tap water are sufficient to remove dirt from the awning. For stubborn dirt, you can also use a pH-neutral detergent.

When storing, you should ensure that the awning is completely dry before you put it into storage. You should also make sure that you do not store the awning in a damp cellar, but in a dry place.

Frequently asked questions about motorhome awnings

What advantages does a motorhome awning offer?

An additional living room, bedroom, a large kitchen or simply storage space? None of this is a problem when camping with a motorhome awning. It also offers protection from rain and wind.

Free-standing or retractable awning?

The advantage of a free-standing awning is that you can simply leave the tent standing and drive away if you want to go on day trips with your motorhome. With a retracted awning, it takes more effort to separate the tent from the motorhome. On the other hand, the transition between the tent and motorhome is better protected from the rain with a retractable motorhome awning.

Inflatable motorhome awning or awning with poles?

Firstly, it is quick to set up and is also very stable: in strong winds, an inflatable motorhome awning simply collapses and then returns to its original shape.
