MSR Manufacturer information

In 1969, Larry Penberthy formed an American collaboration with Cascade Designs in Seatte, Washington: Mountain Safety Research. Originally, however, MSR was a newsletter that published articles on climbing safety. In 1973 Larry Penberthy developed the MSR Model 9 Camping Stove, a product designed to help in cold weather. He separated the stove top from the narrow tank and replaced it with a pressurized auxiliary fuel. He also used a better windbreak. In addition, he developed an ice axe, which you jam into the ice to prevent slipping. In addition to these products, Penberthy also developed an ice axe with a metal shaft. The company was acquired by REI in 1981. In 2000, MSR merged with Edgeworks, a manufacturer of Moss, Walrus, and Armadillo tents. Shortly after these brands were discontinued, all of MSR's tents were sold. In August 2001, MSR was acquired by Cascade Designs.

MSR's goal is to produce durable and repairable products and to use recyclable and sustainable materials. The production of MSR's core products takes place in Europe. This reduces their carbon footprint through unnecessary transportation.

Qualified employees work on state-of-the-art machinery and innovative processes to ensure that the products are manufactured to the highest possible standard. Repairs and spare parts are available for decades to come.

Down used, for example, is 100% RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified. Cascade Designs, Inc. – which also owns the brands Therm-A-Rest®, MSR®, Platypus®, and many more – is a member of eoca – european outdoor conservation association.
