The parents of chairwoman Gert Boyle came to the USA as German emigrants in 1938 and founded the family business, which today operates worldwide. They settled in Portland, Oregon and bought a small hat factory. They named it the Columbia Hat Company, after the Columbia River in their new home. This humble beginning was a significant new start for the entire family.
