Ortlieb Manufacturer information

Frustrated by a wet sleeping bag and soaked clothes, Harmut Ortlieb decides to design a waterproof bike bag. The idea behind it is the tarpaulin of a truck, which protects the load from the rain. After much trial and error on his mother's sewing machine, Hartmut has finished two bags. Red truck tarpaulin offers the hoped-for rain protection and a piece of webbing fixes the lid. The demand increases quickly and the first series of bags is not long in coming

Ortlieb company founded

Followed by a handlebar bag, demand soon overwhelms the one-man business. Family members and friends help out and in 1982 the Ortlieb company is finally founded. Word-of-mouth advertising proved to be a particularly effective advertising strategy. Despite increasing success, the memory of the wet sleeping bag does not let go of the founder, so that he starts first attempts to counteract waterproof seams. Soon the first trials go into production and the first milestone is set. The hardware store hooks used until then were replaced by the Quick-Lock closure. In the middle of the 90s Ortlieb launches the first waterproof backpack "Packmann" with ergonomic carrying system due to the great demand. The capacity in the Nuremberg city centre is finally bursting and the 60-strong workforce moves to the new company building in Heilbronn
