Boreal Manufacturer information

Boreal was founded in 1975 by Jesus Garcia Lopez in Villena, Spain. The area was known for good shoe making and Jesus was an expert in this field. With a colleague he started the new company Calzados Boreal S.L. The first products were a mix of outdoor style, trekking boots and premium quality leather.

First successes

But the company kept growing. After two famous Spanish climbers became aware of Boreal, they approached Jesus to see if he could make a special sole that would be highly relevant to climbing. Jesus dealt with the first "sticky rubber" climbing shoe and thus his first shoe for climbing was born. The "El Capitan." In 1979, a prototype model was completed. The shoe has since become world famous under the name "Fire" climbing shoe. It was named after the shoe he wore during a route on the Mallo

Worldwide success

In the 80s the demand was huge and Boreal quickly became the first choice in climbing shoes. Many legendary climbers such as John Bachar, Ron Fawcett, Lynn Hill, Wolfgang Güllich, Jerry Moffat, Ben Moon and Yuji Hirayama wore Boreal shoes at this time:

  • 1983: Jerry Moffatt – "The Face", Frankenjura – Europe's first 8a+
  • 1984: Wolfgang Güllich – "Kanal am Rücken" – Frankenjura – The world's first 8b
  • 1985: Wolfgang Güllich – "Punks in the gym" – Australia – The first 8b+ worldwide
  • 1990: Ben Moon – Raven Tor, England – The first 8c+ worldwide
  • 1990: Lynn Hill – "Masse Critique" – The first female climber on an 8b+ route
  • 1991: Wolfgang Gülcich – "Action Directe" – Frankenjura – The world's first 9a
  • 1992: Lynn Hill – the first free ascent – "The Nose", El Capitan
  • 1993: Lynn Hill – the first female ascent – 8a
  • 1999: Yuji Hirayama – "Mortal combat" – The hardest ascent 8c
